Sam Smith @ Vector Arena : 22, 23 Apr 2015

sam smith

His soulful voice has captured the hearts of audiences all over the world. Now, Frontier Touring can confirm that Sam Smith is set to bring his highly anticipated ‘In The Lonely Hour’ tour to  New Zealand in April 2015!

Smith first announced himself to the world as the distinct guest-vocalist on Disclosure’s chart-scorching breakthrough track ‘Latch’ (watch here). He then featured on Naughty Boy’s No. 1 hit single ‘La La La’ (watch here), amassing a monumental 400 million views on YouTube and counting.

In July of last year, Smith released the Nirvana EP (out now through EMI Australia). A unique fusion of soul and pop, the EP showcased both his breathtaking vocal abilities and adeptly melancholic lyricism. With the long cited influences of Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan coming through bright and clear, the EP saw Sam Smith named BBC’s ‘Sound Of 2014’ and follow in the footsteps of Adele, Florence + The Machine and Emile Sandé by scoring the Critics’ Choice Award at the 2014 BRIT Awards.

Anticipation had reached fever pitch by the time Smith released his debut album In The Lonely Hour (out now through EMI Australia) in May of this year and boy, did he deliver. An astonishing debut that is equal parts heartbreaking and stirring, In The Lonely Hour has already gone Platinum in the UK and Gold in Australia and New Zealand, debuting at #1 in the UK albums chart, becoming the fastest-selling debut of 2014, and #2 on the US Billboard Chart, ARIA Albums Chart and New Zealand Albums Chart.

In The Lonely Hour’s first single, the ludicrously catchy ‘Money On My Mind’ (watch here) won Smith another UK #1 and Platinum certification. Subsequent single and U.S. debut ‘Stay With Me’ (watch here) has continued Smith’s record-breaking streak, as he becomes the first UK male artist to ever to have his debut single reach #1 at AAA, AC and Pop radio. The gospel-induced soul ballad is being equally adored across seven radio formats in the U.S and has gone triple Platinum in Australia, Platinum in New Zealand and climbed the top ten in over twelve countries.

Smith gave an acclaimed rendition of ‘Stay With Me’ at the recent MTV VMA’s (watch here), a shiver-inducing duet alongside RnB legend Mary J. Blige (watch here), and the track has been reworked by the likes of Ed Sheeran and Florence + The Machine amongst others.

The compelling video for latest single ‘I’m Not The Only One’ (watch here) is a tale of unrequited love and longing that is highlighted by Smith’s trademark affecting vocals that features Glee’s Dianna Agron and The Mindy Project’s Chris Messina.

Paul Kelly Presents the Merri Soul Sessions @ The Powerstation : 12 Apr 2015

pk-merri-soul-webPaul Kelly is pleased to announce another innovative chapter in his long-standing career. This December Australia’s most prolific and innovative singer song writer will release ‘Paul Kelly Presents – The Merri Soul Sessions, his 20th studio album.

Earlier this year, Paul assembled his touring band and an exciting group of singers to record a set of new songs as well as one old classic. The tracks were performed live in the studio by Clairy Browne, Vika and Linda Bull, Dan Sultan, Kira Puru and Paul himself.

Paul Kelly explains …
“In recent years doing band shows with Vika and Linda, Vika had been singing Sweet Guy, an old song of mine, and bringing the house down each time. I was keen to record her version and thought, naturally, that if we were going into the studio we should try and get some other songs on tape as well. I had a song in mind for Linda. I wrote a couple of songs with Dan Sultan that had a soul kind of feeling. And a couple of recent songs of mine, as yet unrecorded, came back into view. They seemed to fit well with the others. Having half a dozen songs now that were talking to each other helped me write a couple more. This is how it goes. One thing leads to another. You never quite know what’s happening ‘til you’re in the middle of it.

I started to imagine a soul revue type record performed live in the studio with a variety of singers and the one band. I’d fallen in love with Clairy Browne and The Bangin’ Rackettes’ Love Letter, the sound of it as well as the song, so invited Clairy and the producer of that record, Steve Schram, to get involved. I’d seen Kira Puru perform One Eye Open live on YouTube and thought she might be the one to nail I Don’t Know What I’d Do, a song left off ‘Spring and Fall’ because I couldn’t sing it myself yet. It needed a torch singer who could balance light and dark. Plus, I loved the way she sang with a big glass of red wine never out of her hand. She, Clairy and Steve, thankfully, all said yes. Meanwhile Vika and Linda had started singing live the two songs Dan and I had written. The stew was simmering on the stove.

From February 17th to March 1st this year we camped in Soundpark Studios, Northcote, right by Merri Creek and recorded a song a day. Sundays off. Our general routine was to rehearse with the band in the morning, getting the song into some kind of shape sonically and piecing out a rough arrangement. The singers would come in later and take it home. We finished all the songs we had in mind a day early so I had time to write a gospel song Hasn’t It Rained as an album closer.

The band comprises Peter Luscombe, drums and percussion; Bill McDonald, bass; Ash Naylor guitar, electric mainly; Cam Bruce, piano and organ; Vika and Linda, harmonies when they aren’t singing lead; and me on rhythm guitar. Dan Kelly guests on one song Keep On Coming Back For More.”

David Gray @ ASB Theatre : 9 Apr 2015

david gray

David Gray captured the world’s attention in 1998 with his breakout multi-platinum album White Ladder, and over the years he has continued to build on his success and remains one of the UK’s most admired singer-songwriters.

David Gray – Mutineers Tour

“Timeless – As the likes of Cat Stevens, Van Morrison and Bruce Springsteen’’ – Peter Vincent from the Sydney Morning Herald on Mutineers

On stage, David Gray lives every word and every note, immersing himself into the whole experience. His songs ‘This Year’s Love’, ‘Babylon’, “Please Forgive Me’ and ‘Sail Away’ from his 1998 album White Ladder have become eternal and unforgettable hits. David was described in his early career as ‘a young Bob Dylan’ by Joan Baez (Bob’s muse when he was in his early career) in 1992 and now 10,000,000 album sales later, David still has the record for Ireland’s biggest selling album with White Ladder.

David Gray returns to Australia from the UK, his last shows in Australia were in 2009 and they were instant sell-outs. His fans on that tour were very avid about Gray’s performances: “It’s all about the music – and the music is fantastic”, “Best night of my life”, “A stellar performance from one of the greatest lyricists of all time”.

David Gray is a great artist, a brilliant performer and master songwriter – an absolute don’t miss in 2015.
