Danish pop stars AQUA return with their amazing live band to deliver all the massive hits that have made them a household name across the globe. With rave reviews and a string of 11 sold out shows across the country in 2012, lovers of 90’s pop have another chance to relive some of the biggest moments in pop history!
In 1997 AQUA owned the airwaves and indeed the upper reaches of the charts across the globe with a string of massive pop hits. Songs including the smash hits Barbie Girl, Doctor Jones and Lollypop (Candyman) had the world dancing to some of the most loveable feel good pop music ever recorded.
Claus Norreen and Søren Rasted started writing together in 1989. The pair then met keyboardist René Dif after hiring the musician to come and work on a soundtrack that the pair had won a competition to produce. After sensing that the trio shared an amazing musical chemistry it was decided they would work together on future projects. On seeing vocalist Lene Nystrøm singing on the Norway–Denmark ferry Dif knew that he had found a vocalist to work with the newly formed trio and AQUA’s first incarnation as Joyspeed was born.
As the band began to develop their trademark bubblegum dance pop sound they renamed themselves AQUA and landed themselves a record deal with Universal Music Denmark, it was this union that lead to the band’s debut release under their new name. The release of their debut album Aquarium signaled that AQUA had arrived and their journey into the pop stratosphere began in earnest on release of their biggest hit Barbie Girl.
Barbie Girl went on to be a super smash hit landing number ones for the band in the UK and Europe, and a top ten on the Billboard Hot 100. More success followed with the singles Doctor Jones, Lollypop (Candyman) and Turn Back Time, cementing AQUA’s place as one of the biggest acts of the 90’s.

‘Jono & Ben at Ten’ brought 90’s rap icon Vanilla Ice to New Zealand for a one-off concert at Auckland’s Powerstation on Friday 24th October.
Jono Pryor and Ben Boyce asked the nation what they’d like to see and they answered with the now infamous Ice Bucket Challenge. Jono & Ben plan to deliver the ultimate Ice Bucket Challenge by bringing the Iceman himself – Vanilla Ice – out to New Zealand.
“We’re excited that one of our favourite 90’s artists is going to help us make the Ice Bucket Challenge bigger and better,” says Boyce. “No doubt Vanilla Ice will be looking forward to getting to stop, collaborate and listen to us scream like little girls when he covers us in ice.”
Touring his latest album Lift Your Spirit, Gold-selling star Aloe Blacc continues to top pop charts with each burst of feel good soul. Bringing the gospel of good spirit to New Zealand audiences, Aloe Blacc’s new record comes to life on stage; his adventurous musicality and ease of melody serenading audiences: with sweet soul number ‘The Man’, international dance sensation ‘Wake Me Up’, and the bubbling R’n’B of ‘I Need a Dollar’. Renowned for his smooth and silk live performances, these tickets will disappear fast; so grab those dollars and get ready to dance. Having recorded with the top producers of the minute – Pharrell Williams, DJ Khalil (Eminem, Drake, Kendrick Lamar), Rock Mafia (No Doubt, Miley Cyrus) – for Aloe Blacc, the only limit is the sky.
Aloe Blacc is joined by local producer/multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire, Estère. Producing and performing with an MPC affectionately dubbed ‘Lola’, Estère plays and records a mix of bass, synth, drums, guitar, keyboard, kazoo, and anything else that takes her fancy — singing all the while. Pulsating rhythms and moody melodies explore the influence of the Electric Blue Witch Hop genre, a realm in which Estère is proving to be a promising player. Singles from her self-released debut album (‘Culture Clash’, ‘I Spy’) have received extensive radio play and international attention; a collaboration with New York/D.C. producer Oddisee (via Red Bull Prodigy) resulting in three awesome new soul-fusion tracks, notably the highly-regarded ‘Flash Light’. Estère has played a large variety of live performances in cities and festivals through-out New Zealand, Australia, South Korea and Europe. Over the last year Estère has also played support slots for Erykah Badu, Morcheeba, Baths, Ikonika and KT Tunstall.
